What is the best wine for your first time?

My wife and I are celebrating our anniversary and we would like to have a bottle of wine with dinner. Neither one of us has ever had wine before, or any alcohol for that matter. What kind of wine would you recommend for someone like us? I have a sweet tooth and enjoy fruit juices so some people have recommended a dessert wine. I don’t even know what that is. What is the difference between wine and a wine cooler? When it comes to wine, I know nothing, and I really mean nothing. Can someone please help?

See if you can find an Italian wine called Nivole, it is an Moscato di Asti. It has flavors of ripe peaches and apricots and is semi-sparkling. Nivole is "very" handy for romance, and will not be a hard wine to enjoy your first time!!! Whatever you choose, with the meal and after, I hope that your night is very special!

Couple of answers to your questions:

I agree with CCK that the after dinner Moscato d'Asti should be an enjoyable way to start your wine adventure & enhance your celebration.

"Dessert wine" is typically enjoyed with or as dessert after a meal. There are numerous categories including port, madeira, 'ice wine', late harvest wines, etc. These wines are oft discussed on this Board, so you'll find plenty of info in the archives using the Search function.

I was GOING to suggest a Moscato d'Asti (and there are scores of producers, look for Marenco, Coppo, Cascina Fonda, Bava, Cascinacastle't, Icardi, Il Falchetto, Sarocco among others) but thought I would get blasted for "don't you ever talk about anything but Italian wines?"!!!! Definitely great stuff for training wheels wines.

BTW- Soo embarassed about my spelling there, de Asti, I need to get more sleep!
Anyway, I am sipping on a little adult "watermelon juice" at the moment, looking for dinner ideas on past threads. (Marques de Caceres Rose, 2000) It's like 80 out today, which is far to hot for Seattle in May!
