Despite my last post, I'd still like to try a first growth Bordeaux. So, what do you all think of a 1984 Lafite? I don't remember 84 as being a great year, and the wine is probably going down hill right around now. But, I can get a bottle for around $125. So, should I or shouldn't I?

I just plunked down $125 for a '94 Lafite which is also not a great vintage. Curiosity I guess to see what one of the renowned wines has to offer. I have an encyclopedia of wine at home that rates vintages and when wine is ready to drink or past prime. I will check on the '84 Bordeaux (general rating--not specific vineyards) tonight and let you know tomorrow what it says.

From what I understand, in each case--84 and 94--you are buying the name. But I have not tasted either.

My encyclopedia was a little more complete than I realized. On the top growths it recommended specific best years. The good news for me is that '94 was one of six recommended vintages in the 90's for Lafite.
The bad news is that '84 was not one of the six recommended vintages in the 80's for Lafite. The '94 vintage in Pauillac region was rated 7 out of 10 overall. The chart didn't go back before '89 for a numerical rating of '84 vintage but Wine Spectator might have that on their site.

Oz Clarke's New Encyclopedia of Wine from Barnes & Noble or amazon.com. I have one of his other wine guides also. The encyclopedia is from 1999 so when it says a wine is just peaking or not yet ready, you have to realize that three more years may have changed that status. There are other sources for current information on when to open or store a wine.
