Pairing Wine with food

I'm totally new to wine. I'm curious as to what wines go with different foods. I've heard that foods can enhance or ruin wine flavor, etc. As an example, what would you pair with cheese, as an appetizer-type thing? Or with pork, steak, pasta, etc.

A current and excellent book on the subject of wine and food matching now available at discount is: "Great Tastes Made Simple" by Andrea Immer. Among much else, she has a thirty three page chapter on matching wine with cheese.
