I am brand-new to wine and I'm still sampling different varietels to see what I like. I tried my first bottle of Sauvignon Blanc this weekend and it had an..."interesting" flavor. The closest description I can come up with is "overcooked Brussels sprouts left out on the counter for four days". I've read descriptions of SB as "pungent"; is this the way it's supposed to taste, or did I just get a poor example? Could be it's just a variety I don't like

Welcome to the board, Badger. You didn't identify the SB you tried, so we can't comment on it. But if you'll look down the board's menu, you'll see a discussion topic on Sauvignon Blanc.... open that and review some old threads, and you'll find several nice SBs that we've enjoyed. Like all varetals, SBs can be made in any number of styles. Your options for finding those that would suit your tastes are to taste as many as you can, or to review the tasting notes of people whose opinions you respect. It's a fun trip.

Also look at and go back on the Australia, New Zealand, South Africa thread as many of the the better SBs come from there. Also check out the Loire thread, as there are more there. Sancerre and Pouilly Fume are SBs.

The board likes NZ I'll go to the specialty wine shop in town instead of the local Liquor Monster and ask them for a nice Kiwi example before I write the whole grape off. Thanks for your help!
