What wine with What foods

I am a new waiter and I consistently get questions from diners asking what wine I would recommend to go with their meals. Is there a basic rule to apply that can in general, for example white wine with seafood. If there is a general rule of thumb, should I increase my knowledge and palate of my favorite wines and recommend those?

Hi Madcat, and welcome to the Wine Board. Your second idea is better than the first. Unless you are one of those people who gets embarassed reading those books with yellow and black covers, recommend "Wine For Dummies." It will give you a great jump start.
