So I am dating a wine snob and I am not a wine novice (I know what I like.) But this guy is an expert. Can you suggest a good bottle of wine that will impress him that won't cost me a small fortune? I know he likes shiraz. He also said the best wine he ever had was something from 1942...PLEASE HELP!!

For all it's novelty and drinkability, I'm not sure that Fat Bastard (which I've had myself and find an enjoyable drink) would impress, and it could possibly carry an unintentioned message. There are some wonderful Shiraz out there (or Syrah, as those from Cali and elsewhere are known). I'm sure that I and others could give you some ideas, but you're idea of a "small fortune" and mine may differ [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/smile.gif[/img]

I'd start by going down on the Australia thread and looking at some of the comments and tasting notes. You may find something that strikes your fancy. Also, we could provide some additional ideas -- I'll jump right in and suggest a California Syrah from Novy or Red Car. Both should run in the $40s.

Kay Brothers "Hillside" Shiraz from Australia retails for under $30 or $40 in different states. I find it impressive. It is fairly widely distributed but you might need to call around to wine shops to see who has it (or check www.wine-searcher.com).

I purchased a great book by Andrea Immer this past weekend. It lists/ranks wines by categories. It is a wonderful book for the novice and experienced wine lover as well. It has been helpful in keeping me from being overwhelmed in a restaurant and in the store.
I needed some concrete suggestions...and this book delivers. It is great for your personal library as well as a gift!

Is this the "Great Wines Made Simple" book? Innkeeper and others on this board have been touting that as a good introductory book on wines.
