I picked up a bottle of Torrontes Fvndacion de Mendoza 2001 at the wine store a couple of weeks ago. The blurb on the back of the bottle sounded like something I might like. My question is: Is this wine a varietal? What type of grapes are in it? I searched on the internet for it but didn't find much of anything to help me.

Sounds like a proprietary name to me, but as most of the time, could be wrong.

It is a varietal. I believe it's a clone of Sauvignon Blanc grown in Argentina.

Not familiar with that one; is "Torrontes Fundacion" the varietal name, or does it include "of Mendoza" in the name, like "Ruche" in Italy often carries "di Castegnole Monferrato," the local region, as part of its name?

Torrontes is a crisp, citrussy, aromatic Spanish varietal that has become the next big thing in Argentina. Yummy with sushi, ceviche, any Cantonese Seafood or maybe Paella...

Thanks God for Roberto. I looked for the second name, not the first. Here's what I found over a Strats Place: Fragrant white-wine grape cÃ©page widely grown in Argentina; and also in Chile where it is known as Moscatel de Austria. Thought to have been imported early in the 20th century by Basque winemakers from Spain where it is currently grown in Galicia on the border with northern Portugal. Mainly used in the production of South American fortified Brandy and as a dry table wine with good acid content somewhat reminiscent of a Traminer wine.

Thanks to all for the great replies. I was really getting confused by the label. I thought Torrontes was the variety, and de Mendoza is the area of Argentina. That's about all I could find during my searches. I haven't opened it yet, but when I do, I'll let you know how it is. I opened a bottle of 2002 Cavit Pinot Grigio tonight. Pretty nice for just sipping while I watched Joe Millionaire. Soft, but not too sweet.
