We are having a large group over for an open house. Need a good red for just quaffing (is that the correct term?). This past couple of weeks I've tried:
1997 Kiona Vintage Rose
1998 Black Mt. (Fat Cat) Cab.
1999 Folonari Merlot Sangiovese
1999 Covey Run Lembarger
1999 Piccini Chianti
My spouse likes the Chianti, Rose she says is to sweet. I enjoy the Lembarger and Sangiovese. Any other suggestions?

All the reds are fine. Would keep the rose' for my next ham pate'. Actually, if we are just sloshing wine down, with no food of any consequence involved, we don't even mind quaffing an oaky doaky chardonnay. You've got plenty of those in your neck of the woods.

Instead of the plain ol' Piccini Chianti, try the Piccini Chianti Classico; it has much more body than the former, and is only a couple of bucks more per bottle. Also, suggest a Primitivo, such as A'Mano, for your gathering, and/or a Beaujolais. There are also plenty of Calif. and Austrailian reds that lend themselves to quaffing at parties; many have been discussed in other threads on this board.

Two under $10 that work with food or as quaffers:

Marietta California Old Vine Red Lot #26 or 27
Rosemount Grenache-Shiraz

A few other reds that work well as quaffers or also with food are:

Cline Vin Rouge (Cotes de Oakley)
Bonny Doon Ca Del Solo Big House Red
Rosemount Diamond Label Shiraz
