Wanted to pass along a little shocker I had this weekend at dinner. My wife and I were invited to dinner at a friend's home here and during the meal, we were able to try 3 different wines. Our starter was grilled sea bass served over a bed of arugula, all seasoned with olive oil and lemon juice. We opened a 1999 bottle of Cassis (white wine - a small port city in south of France). This wine was full of herbs, and balanced nicely with the fish.
The main meal was basically a large pot roast with andives and mashed potatos. The first red wine was a 9 year old St Emilion that was superb, but then he served up a decanted "mystery wine". After several failed attempts, we finally learned that this last red wine was from TEXAS!! Specifically, it was from Llano Estacado, and was a 1991 bottle of their Signature Red, a blend of C.S., merlot and C.F., I think. We were blown away - the first thing you notice after the wonderful smell was the slightly sweet taste of the wine. Not at all what I expected, and plus it went extraordinarily well with the cheese tray after dinner!
This was my very first exposure to a Texas wine, and I was very pleasantly surprised!

Happy eating/drinking!

CS, Merlot and CF is a worthy blend. Glad to hear that some decent juice came from the good ole US of A.

Even if it was Texas...........

Great story Puch! Didn't realize any of the juice coming from our illustrious neighbor would go 10 years. Now if'n it'd been from Oklahoma.........WW

The ringer wine is a great idea - added an exciting element to the dinner!

Glad you guys liked the story - it reinforces the fact that good wine can come from all over, and not just the select areas we generally find ourselves coming back to time and time again.

Adios,
P
