I've searched this forum and the net, but find little info on Romanian wine even though it is one of the top 10 producers.
I am travelling to Romania next week and was hpoing for some suggestions/ recommendations/ tips. Also, where to buy.

Anybody?

Top 10 producers?

Any Romanian wine I have tasted has been worse than disappointing--they ain't there yet.

Maybe you can find their best while you are there.

The situation in Romania is very fluid at this point. There is some information in Tom Stevenson's "Wine Report 2004." The gist of things runs that when the large collectives were broken up, the vineyards were broken up into tiny, tiny parcels and turned over to individal farmers. Their only recourse is to sell their grapes to the large negociants that used to be collectives. A few have been able to expand a little and become independent. Some names in the "Fastest-Improving Producer" category are: Carl Reh Winery, Prahova Wine Cellars (reds only), Vinterra International, Recas, and SERVE. Included in "Best Bargains" are: Black Peak Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 from Vinterra, and two wines from River Route that are for export only. Included in the "Most Unusual or Exciting Finds" are: Le Cetate Merlot 2000 from Carl Reh Winery, Pinot Noir Reserve 2000 from Prahova Valley, Feteasca Neagra 2000 from Vinterra, and Special Reserve Sauvignon 1999 also from Prahova.
