Ummm... White or Red?

For red, I usually recommend non-wine drinkers start with a French Beaujolais, very fruity, friendly, easy and fun to drink. The Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages is a good representative of the region, is available in just about every wine store I've ever been in, and goes for about 9 bucks.

Right off the top of my head I’d suggest White Granache, by EJ&G. It is VERY mild and has a terrific fruity taste to it. It’s very common and is under $10. You'll probably find it anywhere that sells wine.

Well, not quite anywhere. There isn't any Gallo wine in our shop, under any one of their 50+ labels.

Gewurztraminer usually has a spicy and/or nutty flavor along with fruits. It's a white
wine with noted producers in Alsace, France but also produced in California (Fetzer and others). Sancerre (France) rose and rouge (red) wines are quite fruity in flavor but don't exhibit nutty flavors.
