Portuguese Wines

I shall be moving to Portugal soon and would like to know if there are any Portuguese wines that are similar to California Zinfandel wine which I'm partial too. If not, are there any European wines that are similar to Zinfandel?

Hi Maderiaman, and welcome to the Wine Board. I find Dao Reservas to be not unlike some zinfandels I've enjoyed. Check out this thread: http://www.wines.com/ubb2/Forum19/HTML/000064.html

In a large wine store in a major city such as Lisbon, you might be able to find Italian Primitivo, which is essentially the same grape as zinfandel.

The country is FULL of wonderfully diverse wines in almost every style imaginable. Many of the wines made from Porto varietals will be in a style you are looking for but you will almost certainly find that lighter zestier red styles and crisp, refreshing whites and roses are more suited to both the food and the climate there.

PS: shouldn't that be madeiraman??? Madeira is both a famous Portugues wine and my fiance's last name.

Sorry about the spelling. You're right of course.

I don't speak any Portuguese yet but will learn. We are actually moving to Madeira rather than the mainland.

Portugal eh? I lived on Terceira for a year and a half...you MUST try the Portuges Green Wines...they are extremely inexpensive, taste wonderful and they give a very odd drunkenness. Gazela costs about 2.50 Euros, and we used to buy it, and drink it by the case...Casal Garcia is an excellent one also!!
