My fiance and I are getting married in September and we are wine lovers, so we've including a "wine ceremony" during our wedding ceremony.

I will pour a red wine from a bottle into a carafe and she will pour a white wine from a bottle into the same carafe, thus producing a rose and combining our lives into one.

My question is: What red and white wines would combine into something decent (or better)? Has anyone else done this with success?

Thanks,
Lane

First of all, congratulations. Also, welcome to the wine board. I'm sure you know that combining a red and white wine is not how a rose wine is produced. In fact, I'm not even sure if you combined a red wine and a white wine if the resulting blend would even resemble a rose in color. The only time I ever tried something similar was while making sangria one time, long ago, when I ran out of cheap Spanish red wine and needed another bottle of wine in the big punch bowl of fruit. So, I took the only other wine on hand, a nondescript white, and tossed it in. The color didn't change at all -- it still looked ruby red.

The only related thing that I know of that is done is combining Pinot and Chard to produce a sparking wine. To my knowledge, though, the rose hue is produced by keeping it in contact with the red grape skins.

Perhaps others will have ideas for you. Good luck and, again, congratulations.

because of reasons mentioned, i'd use a pinot noir for the red and only a small amount. i think with a lot of white and a little PN you could get a pink wine. i'd try it ahead of time. oh & congrats

As another wine lover I like your idea rather than the lighting one candle together. In Germany at the wedding reception the bride and groom sometimes drink from a two-headed wedding cup. I gave such a gift to the daughter of a colleague when she was married and they successfully shared the wine. Here's an example: http://www.amazon.com/German-Pewter-Bridal-Cup-oz/dp/B002CBFTEC

Thank you to those who've replied. I suppose the best technique is to start visiting our wine store and becoming mix masters ourselves.

This may sound silly but I got a little sloppy about a month ago and combined a Pinot Noir and a Blanc de Noirs to make something remotely tasty. Congratulations and we hope to hear from you again. Especially if you concoct your own mixture successfully.
