non-specific yummy red wine

My boyfriend is cooking a Valentine's Day dinner for me, and he won't tell me what he's making. I said I would bring the wine, and he told me to bring a red, but, being a wine novice, I don't know what would be a good red that could go with many dishes. Thanks in advance for any help.
