Hello,
I am new to the world of wine, and not familiar with the different varieties. I'm looking for a starting point.

I think I will probably prefer a fruity tasting wine with perhaps a touch of sweetness to the taste. Can you offer a recommendation of which types to focus on first?

Also, this needs to be a wine which is not prohibitively expensive, to be used for daily consumption.

Finally, regarding the alleged health benefits, would it be the same in whites as reds? How about dessert wines? Does the area of production make a difference ( France, US, Italy)?

Any information you are able to supply is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Bill

For slightly sweet and fruity whites try a German spatlese not listed as "trocken" (dry) on the label or try a Vouvray from France. Neither should be very expensive. I particularly like the German wines from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer area such as Wehlener Sonnenuhr or Urziger Wurzgarten Spatlese.
For a fruity, slightly sweet red try a Lambrusco or Valpolicella from Italy (the latter is more fruity than sweet). You might also try a Beaujolais village from France or a cru Beaujolais such as Fleurie or Chiroubles. Report back to the wine board if you find a type you like and we will have other suggestions.

Most research shows that it is alcohol, not the color or brand that increases the HDL cholesterol, which has an added benefit to adult beverages.
