I found "Windows on the World Complete Wine Course" by Kevin Zraly very helpful. In fact, after I learned a bit more on my own, I went back and re-read it, and understood even more.

I found "Jancis Robinson's Wine Course" to be a great read: fascinating, unstuffy, and packed with sound advice and tips. Buy it if you can find it!
