Hi, I have a few bottles of 1998 Chateau Vieux Paquillon, Montagne St Emilion, that i want to put down for about 15 years.

If stored correctly, will this wine still be good after that length of time or should it be opened before that? If not, any suggestions for a good red bordeaux that can be stored for that period of time?

This is a blend of about 70% Merlot and 30% Cab Franc/Cab Sauv/Malbec. The recommendation is that it is at its best after 3 to 5 years of cellaring, and that's for the 2000 vintage. So, it appears 15 years may be a tad too long, even though 1998 was very similar to the 2000 in St. Emilion.

Hello Yesfan. Unfortunately I have not tasted this particular wine. However, although over the years I have enjoyed a great number of wines from Montagne St. Emilion as far as I can remember I have never found one that I would confidently call a ‘keeper’ (in your case 17 years). So, as your bottles have recently had their 5th birthday I would hazard a guess that another 2 or 3 will be just about tops. May I ask, does the year 1998 or 2013(?) have a special significance for you, a birthday, anniversary, for instance? If so, and you particularly want to lay something away until then, I'm sure the honourable members of this board will have lots of suggestions for you.T.

Thanks for the informative replies. The reason I want to keep the wine for that length of time is because it will be my son's 18th birthday......so any suggestions for a suitable replacement will be well recieved.

Most of the 5th growths from the 2000 vintage would fly. WW
