I came across this wine spectator review:

---------------
Winery: Château Routas Score: 89

Wine: Viognier Vin de Pays du Var Coquelicot 2003 Price: $17
Country: France
Region: Provence
Issue: Oct 31, 2004

Rich, ripe and finely crafted white from the south of France; aromas of fresh apricots followed by delicious peach, smoke and spice flavors. Well-balanced, with good structure and modest tannins on the long finish. Drink now through 2006. 1,000 cases made. (KM)
------------------

It is the first time I see a mention of tannins for a white wine. Are tannins a regular occurrence in white wine? Do tannins taste much the same in white wine as in red wine? Unfortunately I can't seem to find this particular wine near me.

Might be the oak not the wine giving the tannins.

I'm with foodie on this one. It is the oak, and not the skins giving the wine the tannins. Wierd, I agree. I don't normally expect my whites to be tannic.
