did i get duped?

hey everyone...im not very familiar with the art of wine tasting and enjoying wine for what it is. I just like the taste of wine as long as its smooth. Recently i went to a local wine store, where the owner sold me a 1995 Chimney Rock Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley for $70. is this too much for such a bottle. The reason why i ask is because i don't want to go back to the store if he is taking advantage of me.

also how do i store this bottle, what temperature or how long can i store this bottle? thanks guys

Sounds about right. A quick search on wine-searcher.com showed a NC wine company to be selling for $76. Currently releases are about $40 so they are putting a bit of a premium on this for aging it 10 years for you. Ask them where it's been kept and in what conditions for the last 10 years though as this is important to whether the wine is still drinkable, has improved or gone south.

the owner had it stored in the backroom where he had other wines. do you think i should i open the bottle right away, or can i keep it for a couple of months.

also what is the appropriate way to store wine bottles if you are just starting out.

Hi VH and welcome to the board. This wine should hold without problems if you have a nice DARK and COOL spot. Lay it on its' side with the label facing up(this is probably how it's been stored) and open it whenever you feel the time has come. WW

A 13 y/o wine stored in 'a back room' is not the type of wine I would be purchasing. It could be heat damaged. Even if the room is 75 degrees, the wine has aged four times faster than at 55 degrees. I wouldn't sit on the bottle -- I'd be pulling a cork.

You did NOT get duped. But you should have bought a current vintage ('04) so you could drink the 2 together. Chimney Rock puts out some great Cabernet. Stereotypical Stags leap District fruit. I would have bought it....
