Not sure what you mean by instrument, but brandy is added to the juice(must) to stop the fermentaion process before it is complete (it kills the yeast).

My wife is trying to win a wine contest at work. The question was fraized,What instrument is used to make port. I told her about brandy being added to wine, and she said they want to know what instrument. The only other thing I could find was oak casks called pipes. Any other suggestions? Thanks in addvance.

Sounding more to me like it may be a riddle or joke involving the multiple meanings of port? I may be off base though.

After much thought I have come to the conclusion they are talking about the brandy still. If that 'aint it, I'd go with a piano. WW
