Interesting idea: I heard the sommlier at a very hip Los Angeles restaraunt compare the typical flashy california wines to the "big brodway musical" (lots of big fruit, blast of aroma, lots of oak, not much subtlety = kickline, glitz and glam etc.) He then went on to say that these tend to be their most popular wines...and that their style even matches the Los Angeles lifestyle! He then went on to compare other lower production boutique wines to an underground play or an independant film, praising them for having more subtley, layers, and care taken in their "production." I liked that.
