What wine do you drink with really good steaks at home? I've got some ribeyes I'm going to cook up and would love to know what everyone's favorites are. (Under $30....)

Thanks!

Nothing better than a nice, young Napa Valley Cab. They have a good amount of tannins, which matches so well with the fat in the meat.

As posted on the Bordeaux thread, we thoroughly enjoyed grilled rib eyes with 2000 Chateau Recougne Bordeaux Superieur $10. Hope to pick up somemore soon.

I'm with KC on this one--something like a Robert Mondavi Napa Cabernet Sauvignon only I like it better if the tannins have softened a little such as a 1994 over a more recent vintage or a vintage that resulted in a softer wine such as the 1998 vintage. I liked the 1998 Sequoia Grove (although, rereading my notes I recommended this one for Beef Wellington or Beef Tenderloin and thought it might be too light for a hearty steak). Guess I'll go back to the Robert Mondavi recommendation.

'02 Marquis-Philips McLaren Vale (Australia) S2 Cabernet Savignon ($25-30)

'01 Casa Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre Colchagua Valley (Chile) Merlot ($18-20)

'02 Hahn Central Coast (Calif.) Meritage ($13-15)

'99 Sebastiani Sonoma County (Calif.) Cabernet Sauvignon ($15)

the wine are listed in descending order of body (the "biggest" at the top). the first two wines should be decanted an hour or two, the hahn can be decanted according to preference, and the sebastiani is ready to drink when you pop the bottle. enjoy!

Cab, Merlot, Bordeaux... whatever wine in those categories the cellar has to offer that's both ready for consumption and strikes my fancy to be sacrificed.
