I've read many posts that decribe a cassis aroma,can anyone tell me what this is and where or how can I find a way to experiance it?

Cassis is made from blackcurrants. As far as I'm concerned if a wine is described as having a Cassis aroma, it has a very pronounced blackcurrant aroma. If you are not familiar with the smell of blackcurrants (you will not be alone with that)I suggest you go to a GOOD wine retailer and ask for a wine that has a pronounced Cabernet Sauvignon aroma. You never know, they may have one open you can try.I am not greatly familiar with what is stocked in the States, but perhaps another Board member will suggest a good example. Please bear in mind that you don't need to spend a lot to get a good example. Hope that helps. T.

It's been a long time since I've had cassis (liqueur from black currants). You might be able to get a shot of one in a cocktail lounge if you don't want to buy a bottle. I refreshed my memory of the aroma by getting some black currant tea bags. They do have that definite aroma. For gooseberries (often mentioned in relation to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc) I bought some gooseberry jam at the grocery store. I have also seen red currant and black currant jam. (I haven't done the guava tasting yet--also mentioned in relation to some Sauvignon Blancs.)

Blackcurrant jam is a staple in this house, used on toast and blueberry bagels. Bonne Maman from France is a good brand. Aroma and taste are very similar to Cabernet Sauvignon.

Just bought Hiram Walker Creme de Cassis $8.50 750ml 30 proof. The aroma of cassis is some what overwhelming but it certainly is a good way for us novices to get a handle on that note. I guess I'll use the rest to pour over ice cream; too sweet to drink sraight up.

Cassis too sweet to drink straight up? Sure is. Ever tried a Kir drink? One part Cassis to 5 parts chilled dry white wine. Kir Royale is one part Cassis to 5 parts chilled champagne. Both go down well especially on a hot day.
