I know that a Pouilly-Fuisse is a burgundy from the Maconnias region, but is the Pouilly-Fuisse a specific area within the Maconnias...or is it a specific type of wine within that region?

thanks.

It is both a place and type of wine. Like almost all Maconnais it is made from chardonnay grapes. Generally speaking it is the top of the line of various Maconnais whites. That is not to say that in a given year one man's St Veran is not superior to anothers Pouilly-Fuisse. The '02 GDB should be a good drink. The PF's do tend to carry a little oak unlike most other Maconnais, so match it with something like a butter drenched roast chicken.
