Can anyone suggest a good Merlot?

Im looking for a nice, smooth Merlot to go with pasta or steak. I've tried Chateau St. Michele and a few others and liked them ok but would like to find something better. I'm basically looking for suggestions. I don't like anything real thick. I'm also interested in a good Cab thats lighter if there is such a thing??

I don't know what your price point is but the '98 Columbia Crest Grand Estate merlot and cab for about $10 are very nice. Also the '99 Wente Crane Ridge Reserve merlot for around $15 is very tasty.

I've been through St Helens recently. Its very pretty up that way. I don't imagine they have much of a wine selection there though. Do you do much shopping in portland? If you do, look for 1999 Bogle California Merlot. It'll go with the steak, but wouldn't recommend a Merlot for pasta...

The best Merlot I've tasted recently is by William Hill. It is smooth and pleasant, and generally retails for $20-22/bottle. Their Cab is also nice, but a little more of an ooomf to it.

Try a bottle of Hedges Columbia Valley Red, a Cab/Merlot blend (with some syrah for flavor). It's $12 locally, and VERY tasty. Or look for some Kiona. If you've got time, drive up to the Tri-Cities/Red Mountain and Walla Walla and spend a Saturday tasting some fabulous merlot and cab...you'll find something you like, I'm sure.

All the best merlots come from the regions called Barbera and Salice Salentino. Always look for those words on the label and you should be not only happy but save money as well
