Recommendations for purchase

I am not new to the enjoyments of drinking wine, but I am new to the process of making wine. I recently obtained land in the Ohio River Valley region and I am turning it into a vineyard. My quesion is if anyone knows a quality supplier of grape stalks to start my venture in producing my vineyard? Locating suppliers has definitely been a problem for me at this point. All suggestions will be appreciated.

hello fellow Ohioan,

I live on the southern tip of Ohio, not to far from your home turf, about a three hour drive.

When you get your winery going, post here and I will try to make the time to pay a visit, if you allow visitors. I know very little about wine, but am enjoying learning about it.

Our of curiousity, how long does it take to get from scratch (planting the vines) to producing grapes to make the wine?

I am happy to see a fellow Ohioan in this mix. In regard to your question/questions when you plant vine stalks from scratch, in my area, it will take three years until the vines will be fruit bearing. So until that time I am buying in grapes of what I plan on using in the vineyard and attempting to refine my wine making techniques. So by the time the vines are fruiting I will be comfortable in the process.
As for visiting the vineyard, that would be perfectly acceptable. At this point I would say it is no more than simply bare land. I just had a guy come in and cultivate the ground. So hopefully I will be installing the posts and trellises shortly.

I've heard in some cases it takes five to seven years before the vines produce enough grapes to make it posssible to bottle wine for commercial sales.

definately requiring a commitment. But the rewards I am sure can make it worthwhile, and not just the money rewards.

I will be looking forward to visiting your vineyard in a few years and seeing the fruits of your labor and love.
Driving along the river can be beautiful, especially in the fall, and it would be a nice way to spend a day visiting vineyards and learning more.
