I was wondering if anyone could give me the name and contact information of a qualified wine appraising organisation. They can be anywhere in the World, but preferably would be French, Italian, or US. In addition, I was wondering if anyone knew of a qualified wine appraiser or judge in China who could help assess labelling or taste for a local wine? If you can't think of anyone in China then I would be happy with just the name of an organisation elsewhere in the world which might provide this kind of service. I would like to assess a local Chinese wine which will soon be launched in the Chinese domestic market.

One more question, are there any developped standards for the assessment of wine labels which someone can suggest to me or direct me to?
Thank you for your help,

Jason Richardson

Jason, the only appraisers that I know are at auction houses e.g. Butterfield & Butterfield, Winebid.com, etc.

I think we may be dealing with a semantic problem here. The word "appraiser" implies estimating the value of a rare or collectable wine.

I think you may be looking for a consultant who can advise you as to label design of the bottle and the quality (and maybe even technical soundness)of the wine.

There are many folks (individual winemakers, laboratories and marketing experts) who do what you suggest, though I do not know any in China.

I personally do some consulting, as to sensory perception and overall package design (if you're designing a package to market in the U.S. - I wouldn't be of much use for Chinese market). And if you need to know specific language to qualify the wine label for sale in the U.S., there are also companies which specialize in legal compliance.

If you would like to discuss your needs more specifically, feel free to contact me via e-mail @ winetrader@aol.com

And I'll try to help you.
