In Search Of Sweet, Earthy, "Thick" Wines

Do they exist?

I'm a total newbie, but I know what I want. I've become fond of a couple of varieties (Shiraz, Riesling, a few Cabs & Merlots), but I'm looking for something specific now.

A wine to bolster me. To write with. To be inspired by. I'm willing to drop up to $30 per bottle if it's truly legendary.

When I say sweet, I'm not meaning like Manischewitz...more of a dignified sweet flavour.

Can anyone out there help this clueless newbie?

The Italians make scores of different examples of "Vino da Meditazzione" that fit your bill. You should be able to find some Recioto della Valpolicella with not much problem. Another idea (and it's cheap) is Mavrodaphne de Patras from Greece. Then there is port but be carefull, that stuff is strong!

An additional thought: for "inspirational" reds not requiring food, I head straight for the Zinfandel department. Not truly "sweet", but more forward fruit than Cabs or Merlot. Check out the Zinfandel thread for ideas. If $30 is the limit, then consider Fife Mendocino Zin or Fife Redhead Vineyard Zin available at $20+.

I would go talk with the wine steward at the Redmond center Larrys, they should be carrying all the wines mentioned above. Other good wine places, but a bit further away; QFC across from Bell Square or Pete's wine shop. My 2 cents: Buy an LBV port.

I honestly thought I was dreaming up a fantasy wine...especially for the price range I'm staying within.
But I'm sooo happy to be wrong.

Larry's in Redmond is a good resource, true, but I'm going to try Fine Wines in Redmond Town Center first - I've heard some great things about them.

If anyone else sees fit to post more ideas, I'm all for it - more is always better.
