Dummies is an excellent book. Not familiar with Idiots. Here is another excellent choice: "Essential Winetasting" by Michael Schuster. It is suitable for novice and experianced wine drinker alike. You can get it from Amazon delivered to your door for less than $25.

It not only covers every sensual aspect of tasting in detail, but also how wine is made and named. Details on all the world's wine grapes follows. Then he puts the two together walking you through specific tastings of specific wines. He wraps up with a reference section that includes maps of all the world's wine regions.
