This is probably a stupid question, but I have been wondering lately. If I leave a bottle open for a few days, and the wine is clearly spoiled, is it unhealthy to drink it? I know it won't taste good, but I am just wondering if I could get sick from drinking it or anything. Any info would be appreciated.

Unless it gets tainted by an outside source, including airborne ones, the only thing that will make you sick is the fact that you didn't finish it sooner. To help you in the future you might want to pick up Andrea Immer's "Wine Buying Guide for Everyone" (less than $12 at Amazon). She includes a "survivor" guide for the over 400 popular wines she evaluates. This is time in the fridge for whites, and time on the countertop for reds. You do have to stick the cork back in them though!

Well Randy I thought I'd seen every (as you so well expressed it) stupid question but this one's the cake-topper. My immediate retort is " Why in the name of Spider-man would you want to?" and secondly, the reason most of us communicate on this board " Why would you take a beverage associated with happiness, sharing, and adulation and drink it like Ray Millands' character in the Lost Weekend?" Wine enhances, Vinegar dresses. SHEESH!!!WW

I didn't mean to offend WW [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/smile.gif[/img]. I was just asking because I sometimes will have wine with a cigar. The cigar is usually so overpowering compared to the wine, that I cannot even taste the spoilage. Even though the taste is masked by the cigar (unless its a port), I still like the smooth texture of wine with a cigar compared with something like a beer or soda. I was just curious if I was going to make myself ill one of these days. I am still working on getting up to a bottle a day so I won't have to worry about it!

Randy, a cigar with wine? That is likely the worst way to enjoy wine. The cigar is too strong, too overpowering to fully appreciate the wonderful subtleties of the many components in wine. Replace the cigar with food, and see how great wine can be.

Incidentally, you are likely to get sick--long term--from the cigar well before you'll get sick from spoiled wine. Even with tobacco's influence on the tongue, a spoiled wine makes itself quite clear quite easily.

Granted, Foodie, a cigar may be the worst complement to wine one could imagine, but that's not the point. Randy enjoys wine with his cigars- no harm there. A person might like ketchup on their eggs, which is pretty foul in my opinion; but I would not be so bold to imply they are wrong.

You are correct kilroy, it is what Randy likes that counts, which is why I never said it was wrong to have a cigar with wine.

I said it is likely the worse combination, and then I suggested a potentially better combination--wine with food.

I like eggs and ketchup, even better I like an omelet with pulled pork bbq in the center and a covering of A-1 steak sauce on the outside.......
