Sorry to disappoint, but you probably have a bottle full of some form of vinegar by now.

I'd dare not even use it for salad dressing. Most gamay bottlings are not age worhty (a few from the Cru Beaujolais AOC in France are) and are meant to be drunk when released by the winery. Your 1979 Souverain Gamay was ripe for dinking in 1979.

I'd pour the contents down the drain and donate the bottle to the recycling bin, I would.

Actually "California Gamay" from that era was made from early season pinot noir from young vines. That makes no difference here. Even a late season pinot from old vines would be long gone at this point. Sorry.
