how dark

I have a wine storage unit that has dark smoked glass on the front and the unit itself stays under the stairs and away from any direct light source. During the day it is rather dark but not pitch black. Is this sufficient for long term wine storage or does the environment need to be pitch black 24/7.

You should be perfectly fine. The main concern is UV light and your smokey glass (and under the stairs) should take care of that.
