Hi Joanne, and welcome to the Wine Board. As you say there are a number of fine wine maps/trails available for the Finger Lakes. Just one example can be found at: http://www.interlakes.com/flp/flpwine/flpwineld.html . As far as wines are concerned, a good one to start with is Finger Lakes Dry Riesling, which are among the best rieslings going. Would also hunt down a posting by our good friend Foodie, and e-mail him. He used to run a winery in the area, knows the other winemakers, and still maintains a home there.

Joanne,
you are on Seneca Lake--there are dozens of wineries all around the lake. Go on the trail, taste many different wines and decide for yourself which ones you like best, Nobody can truly tell you where to start.
