the word "t a r" followed by a space and then the ampersand symbol (for and). Why is that?

Wierd Eng, I see what you are saying. I just typed t a r (letters together of course) and an & and got the below message. They don't have to follow each other, just have to be in the same message.

Sounds like a little glitch is occuring and I am betting the problem is the ampersand. Whenever a message is posted, a "string" is created for the server to process. The string consists of several parts held together by ampersands. If you use an & in the topic name, the systems thinks that the & is separating parts at that point -- and gets confused. So, the moral is to not use ampersands when naming a new thread topic. It's not an issue for replies, obviously.

Jackie

It's the word "t a r" I just tried it alone and it won't work.

And the ampersand can be in the body of the message and not in the thread title. Yes it is an issue in conjunction with the word t a r in replys. Try it and see. Very strange.

The T word is reserved as a command for compressing files on a UNIX/LINUX system. It makes perfect sense to me, althougoh I wouldn't have predicted this.... Oh well.

We use to play a version of ping pong in university called Super Unbeatable Ping Pong (Loose translation). The game's rule is that before the ball is served, the referee will come up with a question which has multiple answers (i.e. Name a NY subway station) and before the player is allowed to hit/return the ball they have to give an answer. Trust me...you can't believe how hard this is.

One of the most popular questions was "Name a Unix command"! I can't believe I couldn't remember that one....now you know how geeky I am.....

So why does the t only have a problem when used in the word t a r and not top or tap?

I think Jackie was saying that t a r word is a command--not t o p.

Eng, we knew how geeky you were when you explained all the planning that went into your first wine tasting for friends (and you replied about something like how you arrange your cupboards or closets.) Don't worry, it's endearing. After all, engineers have to be precise or their structures don't stay up.

I have a friend who's an engineer, but he's also a explosives and demolition expert. The structures he touches don't stay up or he doesn't get paid.

Is he a rambling wreck from Georgia Tech? or does he just wreck structures?

Actually, I don't know where he went, but he does consulting work in bringing down structures very neatly into small piles.

Hope I didn't put you to sleep, WOW.

Eng, as far as being geeky, your name sort of suggested it. Reminds me of an english professer with a puffy hair and crazy glasses. Just kidding. I don't know you well enough to make such accusations. Read earlier Champagne post.
