Harvest begins in the Texas Hill Country tomorrow, and I'm planning to pick SB grapes at Spicewood Vineyards. Will launch at 0500 and attack at 0630. Yee-haw!

Dunno. Never even tasted their juice. Plan to rectify that tomorrow.

That was fun. Hotternhell, but fun. About 90 miles north of here, Spicewood Vineyards has 17 acres under vine with a below-grade winery. Very nicely laid out, nice people, a delightful property. I think there were nine of us who showed up to pick 2 ac. of SB this morning; began at 0630 and quit at 1130 when the temp hit 97F. Had lunch, sampled a few wines, and drove home.

Tasted the '01 SB ('02 was only 60 cases and sold out months ago) and bought six of that; tasted the '02 CS and ranked it only fair... can taste the varietal character, but not true to form IMO. Tried the '01 Merlot and rated it better than the CS, bought a couple.

They've only been in business for 12 years, but have developed a very nice operation. If they keep working on their winemaking, they'll do just fine. Nice folks.
