(Chile)

It's a matter of time and patience. I will spend the time to pay attention to vintages for Oregon Pinot Noir, for the S. Rhone, Rioja, etc., but I'm not going to go out of my way to find out about how recent Carmenere vintages in Chile have gone, nor am I likely to keep it at the front of my mind for the next time I'm buying a $9 weekly quaffer. So, I tend to stay with reliable producers, and this Morende bottle has been a very nice QPR weekly wine for the past few years. However, this time not paying attention may have bitten me. I still have no idea whether the '04 Carmenere vintage was good or bad, nor am I likely to go searching to find out, but this wine was IMHO underripe, with strong herbal, vegetal aromas and flavors. I know that the grape is very late-ripening, so that's my guess about what happened to it. Not good at all, so I've got a small hole in the "daily drinker" department.

yeah, Carmenere can be really green when under-ripe. i really like Casa Silva's at about the same price point, maybe a bit more. haven't had the 04 yet, but their 04 cab is good (but not ready!)

Thanks for the tip! I like the change-of-pace Carmenere offers as a daily-drinking wine.

On an unrelated topic, I know you've been inundated on this board with Madison references, but you're in one of my favorite places on Earth. I grew up on Lake Ripley in Cambridge, WI, and always loved Madison. I wanted to go to school there, but, alas, my HS grades got in the way, so I was left with the alternatives of UW Superior or the Univeristy of Alabama. 17 years later, and I'm still in the South. Go figure. Oh, and BTW, I saw that you are pursuing a degree in Secondary EH. I got a MA in that area. All the best for your success!

thanks,
yeah- i was surprised at all the madison people! i've only lived here a year and a half, but i really love it.
i'm originally from St. Louis (Mt. Pleasant makes a DAMN good port, by the way), did my undergrad in English and Russian Lit at UM-Columbia, spent some more time kicking around, and am now up here. I've done a lot of sub. teaching and am volunteering at an alternative high school up here as well, and am pretty excited to get my certification. I'll be done with it a year from this May.

saw your post on malbec also, (thread jumping alert!) and I really like Kaiken Ultra and Catena. both around $20...
