What a mouthfull of juice. Deep purple, almost opaque, this has all the makings of a 40-year ager. Black fruits, smokiness and bacon fat, and just a touch of spice, this will carry the load wuith almost any food you can throw at it. Splash decanted for 3 hous, then splshed back into the bottle this almost released the half-nelson on me tongue. In the mouth the considerable tannins weren't as evident as imagined. Lots going on that will only improve with 5-8. Rite now suggest putting wild game, brats, pepper steaks on the grill and enjoy. 91/95 14.40 on the club. WW

Opened another for lunch today with the Bail/ground Turkey meatloaf with baby bella mushrooms. From 60 year-old vines in the Mendicino Valley this is a killer bottle of juice. The tannins are there but soft and silky. Will improve for 3-7 and hold for who knows? No change in scoring. WW

She said yesterday she planned to fix turkey meatloaf for supper. I thought initially a Spanish Garnacha might work best, but decided to consult the board's old posts before committing. Did a search on "turkey meatloaf" and up jumped this post from Herr WW. Found two bottles in CT inventory and sure enough, there they were in the cellar. Popped one a couple of hours before supper and just let it sit undisturbed without even a sniff. Then poured as we sat down. Sniffed. SNIFFED! S-N-I-F-F-E-D! Holy smokes, we couldn't get our noses out of our glasses! Bee-yootiful! More on the tasters. SNIFFED again! Sniff-slurp-sniff-slurp-sniff-slurp! Bottle's too danged small!

Now she's ordered me to try to find some more! See what you did, Verne?! It's all your fault!

The vintage we received recently was the '07.

I wouldn't call it a cocktail wine..... it needs food, the heartier the better. If trying the '07, suggest a serious decant... the longer to tease your nose.

What's it selling for?

I'm going to look for it in this market.

Foodie, the regular price for the '07 is $18.00 or $15.30 through the SCMV wine club. Call or fax the owner/winemaker Jeff Emery at (831) 426-6209, or see his Web site at www.santacruzmountainvineyard.com.

Had another tonight with more turkey meatloaf, green beans & garlic mashers. Wonderful juice! Quick check of the cellar turned up a single bottle of the '03, plus some '05s, '06s and '07s.
