2005 August Briggs Pinot Meunier

We're watching Bottle Shock again (we bought it on DVD -- entertaining movie, by the way). Wanted to have a Cali wine tonight, but wasn't in the mood for anything in the ordinary. This fits the bill of different.

This is great, interesting stuff. Has the body and weight of a Pinot Noir, but this is more earthy than fruity, with aromas of licorice and barnyard and subtle red and black fruit flavors delivered in a loamy, mushroomy, barnyard-y . . . well . . . earthiness. Just wonderful, though. Very silky and polished with good acidity. Again, not the typical wine, but very, very tasty. We bought it at the winery when we visited in summer '07. Back then, it was good, but not this good. Tasted, frankly, like an aged Chiroubles Beaujolais. Anyway, unique stuff that makes me wonder why more people don't make a still, varietal PM. We've got one from Siduri we might open soon, just to compare. Don't remember how much we paid for it, but probably between $25 and $30. Alc. 14.5%. Oh, and it's a Napa Valley wine.
