That kind of tasting is the way I think competitions should be held--if the judges are not told in advance the variety, leaving it to their training and talent to discern it, I believe many unthinkable results would follow.

Popped the '04 Merlot last night. It was every bit as good or better than Mark described the '02 to be.

It gave red fruit on the nose and upfront, more fruit including plums, smooth tannin, and a little earthiness in the middle, and a lovely finish. All this at 12% alcohol!

Matched it with bacon wrapped fancy burgers cooked over charcoal and oak chunks on our newly refurbished 35 year old grill, sauteed Shitake 'rooms, baked potato, and tiny peas. Yum!
