2000 Daniel Gehrs Cabernet Franc

This is 100% Cab Franc from the Stolpman Vineyard west of Los Olivos, and only neutral oak was used. On release in Spring '02, the winery suggested bottle aging for 3-5 years, so I guess we cracked it right inside their window.

Poured two glasses, and rest went into decanter for the evening. Dark, but transparent ruby in color. Violets and purple plums on the nose. Plum and black cherry fruit very subdued, and there is a minerality that dominates the wine. Seems very "old world" in style. Almost a chalkiness on the finish, which may not be all that surprising, as the vineyard has a large amount of calcareous limestone in top and subsoils. Tannins mostly vanishing, and overall this is a medium-bodied wine. It certainly relies on subtlety and terroir rather than explosive fruit, but that isn't a criticism. Anne had a neutral-to-good take, saying, "It was good, but it was a Cab Franc." Alc. 13.1%. Paid about $20 locally.

Our first wine from Gehrs that wasn't a Pinot Noir -- he makes one of our favorite PN year in and year out, and you've likely seen our PN posts periodically through the years.
