We journeyed across the ridge last night to celebrate my 60th at the Grey Moss Inn. Debra had grilled salmon and a glass of PN, while I had grilled red snapper with a bottle of this lovely SW. (What can I say? It wasn't available by the glass.) This was a delightful Sancerre, with its origin in the estate's flint and limestone soil clearly evident in its bone-dry acidity. I correctly guessed the vintage as a '99 without looking at the label, due to its faintly green-apple bite. Suspect the best is yet to come, with it improving for at least a couple more years in bottle, but still an excellent restaurant buy at $27.

Debra drove us home in a blinding thunderstorm along the narrow road (another old stage route) that criss-crosses the Helotes Creek. We both were thinking of the six years in the 80's when we lived near the restaurant, right above the creek, and watched the road wash out at least once each year. Fortunately, it has since been re-engineered, so that it's now a much safer road to travel in heavy rain, and we were sure grateful for that last night! The gauge showed 2.4 this morning.

I quit smokin' over 10 years ago. Don't even chew cigars much any more, 'cause Debra says the butts look like somethin' a dog left behind. Posing for a calendar....? Naaaa, not in this lifetime. Gotta go stock up on Geritol and Metamusil, before Bucko and the Weener corner the market!

Somehow don't think the world is ready for that kind of calendar! Wouldn't want to scare the bejeebers out of any little kiddies or blue-haired ladies who might see it. We'd probably be better candidates for the bulletin board down at the local post office, or maybe a spot on America's Most Wanted.

Thanks, Mike. I didn't do much that day but go to dinner, and transport beef and mosquitoes back from the country. Even with the AC on full blast, both windows down, and hittin' 80 mph, there were still a bunch of those suckers in the cab when I got home! No wonder the cattle looked at me like they wanted to be somewhere else!
