On Saturday, sisterdear and I, along with our home town's historical society drove up to Jersey City to take the ferry over to Ellis Island. We had never been there. It's a very interesting place, and the restoration is really phenomenal. We looked up some of our Irish ancestors and gained a new appreciation of the hardships endured by the thousands of immigrants who were processed at E.I. The weather was just awful and the worst part of the day was the almost two hours it took (a good deal of which was outside in the rain)to get through the crowd and the security checks to board the ferry for the ten minute ride to the island. ugh

That is a terrific place, and the system they have is a great help for millions of Americans. All of both of our ancestors have been over here since before they built the place, so we will let the other millions check it out.

All four of my grandparents came in through Philadelphia. I don't know what the process was there or how it differed from Ellis Island.
