10:05 AM on a dreary Sunday in Santa Monica and my first customer wants a bottle of Cristal Champagne. I ask if he is interested in the fact that he can get TWO bottles of something comparable and change back from that sort of money and he declines as he wants "the best".

THEN he asks, "I don't know anything about this stuff, do I have to chill it or can I just pour it on ice"......

Swear to God!

Her we go, Amateur Hour is beginning, Roberto

Beverly says you should have sold him two bottles of Crystal and told him to pour it over the ice.

I worked at a liqour store in the ealry 70's and a good ol' boy came in and told me that the family had sent him out to buy some brandy for the Christmass eggnog. I steered him to some California brandy but he looked on the top shelf and saw a bottle of R.M. Cordon Bleu. Of course, the price was way out of line compared to the brandy I had shown him and he said something like "Man what is that?". I took the bottle off the shelf to show him and was about to expound[I was only working there for about two weeks] on the difference between French Cognac and the brandy when he said "Damn, it's only 80 proof!" I stood there for a few seconds, shrugged my shoulders and took him to checkout with the Cal. brandy.

Roberto, I had to bite the bullet for a 7-case Champagne order; in order to get it I had to supply a case of Santa Marg...I can't say it.

I tried the same tactic you tried but the lady told me she didn't care if what i could sell her for less money was better than the Saint; she wanted the Saint because it is soooo popular.

I bought the disgusting P Grigio for her from the competition and did not mark it up.
