On Saturday night this past weekend, My 5 year old sons school conducted a fairly high profile auction at the University of Washington. Of course as with most of these types of events there was plenty of beer and wine easily available for consumption. As I was checking in, I was looking at the first drink station to check the quality of wine, and thus make a quick decision whether I would be drinking beer or wine that night, and to my surprise, I could identify from 15 feet, that there were 3 bottles of Leonetti, already open and waiting to find their way into somebody’s glass!!! I quickly had my wife stand in line, while I checked out the goods at closer inspection. At this table there was a 96 Cabernet, a 97 Sangiovese, and a 97 Merlot. I asked if there were more of these in the back, and she said yes!

I quickly got my self a glass of the 96 Cab, and my wife a glass of the Sangiovese, and we really enjoyed sipping these. As we wondered around the auction, sure enough, more bottles started showing up at other stations as well, I was in disbelief!

After polishing off the Cab, I was getting a glass of the 97 Merlot in my glass, when someone came up and said, “stop serving the Leonetti”! I asked why, and he said apparently these bottles were part of a whole case that was supposed to be up for bid during the live auction!!! I told the guy these bottles were worth in excess of 100 bucks each, he looked around and said, “Quick, give me a glass”!

To even add to oddness, when you approach the bar, there was one white, and one red displayed side by side as your selections, and of course the Leonetti was standing tall next to a bottle of………2 buck chuck Chardonnay! I wish I had a camera.

Grape Snort. What a great story. An auction here in Phoenix in 92 did the same thing with a double mag I donated. I thought it was strange that they were pouring a 78 Volcanic Hill from Dble Mag but I stood by the booth and went thru 2 LARGE 'afore the chairman slunked up and said who opened this bloomer? Happens alla' time when a charity auction without knowledgeable people are in charge. ( Got a 3rd LARGE afore they took it to the podium. I endended up buying the remains and our table had lottsa'fun. WW

similar thing here. They took the open bottles, and auctioned them off for consumption during dinner. In the end it worked out ok.
