I was assigned to bring the potato chips to a hamburger grill party on Saturday, but I really don't want to just bring a couple bags of taters. Anybody got any ideas on an alternative to chips that's more fun I could make as a side to burgers and veggies with dip, etc.? I'm willing to cook/bake for this one, and nobody at this thing will care at all if I brought something other than the ubiquitous potato chip. I was thinking of maybe making homemade pretzels or something...

Homemade potato chips are much, much better than storebought, and if they want chips bring them your chips.

Andy,

Pour some olive oil into a frying pan and turn up the heat.

Slice Idaho potatoes in thin circles.

Deep fry them in the olive oil and at the last few seconds add some chopped garlic.

Lift the taters out when golden, sprinkle a dusting of sea salt on them, drain them and take them to the party.

Deeeeeevine!

Hmmm...I might have to try that. I've never had homemade potato chips, but that could be fun. Thanks for that suggestion!

KC, if I didn't I would not be doing my job.

Andy--in case you didn't know, I was sent from beyond to make sure that every human being eats his/her share of garlic, cooks and creates salads with his/her share of olive oil, and drinks at least as much as I do of wine--well, not as much; that would be asking too much of most people.

I am compelled to do this by the gods. If I don't mention garlic, wine and olive oil at least once each day I will be turned into a grapevine trellis and forced to hold up concord vines for eternity...

Way to go, Foodie. I threw out the bait and you took it running. Good job. BTW, do you notice any spikes in book sales when Garlic Wine and Olive Oil get mentioned here?

The olive oil and garlic give them an added dimension--a forward white or a light red does ok, but beer does well too.

I haven't tried it, but sherry might work.

I usually serve those potatoes as a side dish for a meat course. There is another way to prepare them that involves drying them. It's a Portuguese recipe.

Hi Tom,

I liked the potatoe chip recipe so much I just ordered a copy of your book.

Maybe you should do that more often!
