I'll confess to not having tried the white one, either. It's ubiquitous in the local supermarkets; even those that don't carry the red seem to always have an abundance of the white. Someone must be consuming a lot of it.

I'll take your advice and pick up a bottle or two of the 1997 La Vielle Ferme Rouge for $5.50 a bottle. The sale lasts through Friday at nationally famous Haskell's (612) 333-2434 and five other branch locations, if you think this is a good deal.

Tastings Institute had ratings of the 1996 La Vielle Ferme Rouge (84 and Best Buy designation) and the 1997 La Vieille Ferme Blanc (83 and Best Buy designation). Not bad.

The original subject of this thread, the Rhone Rouge is on sale in New Hampshire Package Stores for $5.99. Now that's a value. Incidentally the grapes in it are Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, and Mourvedre.

P.S. We bought some.

my local wine store has the 98 listed in their mailer at 4.99. Wasn't the 98 vintage a good year for Rhones?

raggedy1, yes the 98's were good but I havn't tried the 98 "Old farm". I'd bet it's good though....It's always been a solid wine staple.

Hey Drew. I stopped by my wine shop and asked about the 98 La Vielle. I was steered towards a Louis Bernard Cote du Rhone for $6.59 as a better buy. The 4.99 for the La Vielle was a misprint and it actually sells for $5.99. Anybody experience the Louis Bernard 98???
Opened a bottle of Chateau des Tours 98 Cote du Rhone last night. A good buy at $9.99! The typical Rhone qualities are all there. could use a longer finish, but for 10 bucks I'm not complaining...

Popped a '99 Rhone Valley, Cotes Du Ventoux Rouge ($5.99) last night with a light supper. Don't know how they do it. If Mother knew how little it cost, I wouldn't be able to get anthing else!
