How do they do it? This is a stunning value wine - buy it by the case loads.

Cline, Zinfandel, California, $10, 86,000 cases. This wine is all about raspbery jam, on the nose and on the palate. Well-balanced, with nicely integrated oak and loaded with fruit pleasure. There is a very long, lush, berry aftertaste, with modest tannins. Excellent value.

Hey Bucko, is that the 1998?

I'm sitting in the Tokyo airport right now, with my laptop in tow, and after a week in Asia without wine, I'm going to be on the prowl for some!

Bucko, thanks for the clarification. Foodie, you guys gonna have this wine in stock? I recall in an earlier thread that you were going to specialize in "hard to find wines." Exactly what kind of inventory are you going to start out with? My apologies for the digression from the thread...

RAD (in the Portland, OR airport now, almost home!)

OH YEAH! Why didn't you ask me. I've been touting the CLINE line to several of my friends (here in Virginia) for sometime now.

Their 1999 Zin is really good stuff. My favorite daily drinker, though, is their Cotes D'Oakley which, I believe, Bucko said he did not like.

Oh well......

But the ZIN is REALLY good!!

bucko,

thanks for the tip. but here's my question: which do you like better, the 99 cline zin or the 97 rancho zabaco sonoma heritage vines?

i've found a shop that still has a few cases left of the rancho zabaco and i was gonna go grab another one this weekend. that stuff is awfully tough to beat, and i can get a case at less than $8 per bottle.

hmm, so much wine to try, so little time.

I favor the Cline -- it sells for around $8 at discounters as well. $10 is the SRP.

Down here in Maryland, we's only got the 98's...haven't seen the 99's yet. Lonely and thirsty for Zin in bay country.

Cotes D'Oakley -- Not my favorite.

I have not tried the Virginia Zin -- I'm actually looking forward to trying it. I try to keep an open mind on all wines -- many jewels come from unexpected places.

I'll post a note when I try it.

WW, you are right! The 98 Cline Syrah (carneros) is excellent! Tasted a bottle (day after opening) and found it to be great - the likes of a good cote-du-rhone. Nice balance of fruit, spice and alcohol with a medium/long finish. The wine consultant told me that it was closed when first uncorked, but really opened up after an hour or so in the glass. Was VERY tasty today, the day after uncorking!

The 1999 Cline California ZIN is super stuff.

Had a bottle tonight. Very good, worth the price, IMHO.

Boy, I don't want to sound like a spoil sport but I don't see the big deal about this wine. Finally got it here in Bay Country for $7.99 a bottle and bought a few. Popped one tonight, briary almost barnyard nose, very fruit driven with a moderate finish....nice picnic wine but I'll trade a case for the 97' Zabaco any day! Youse guys drinken the same wine as me or are your taste buds dumb?

Oh Drew, be nice! Our taste buds can not possibly be as bad off as WW's. We've not been around as long as he has! Give him a break.

Might have been that the wine was affected by the cold as it made the trip from CA to MD?

I'd be willing to bet that the distributor did not have it shipped overnight air to avoid the possible freezing temperatures.

Just my guess. But the bottle of 1999 Cline ZIN that I had was good stuff. I can't wait to taste their greatly more expensive bottle of 1998 Reserve Zin.

I too enjoyed the 98 Cline when I tried it months ago and was a bit worried when the vintage changed last month, as it's been selling so well! But the 99 is even a bit better IMHO. Drew, maybe the Cline is just not your style? (Personally I prefer my Zins to be more full bodied and peppered.) Anyway, IMHO I am happy to mention that the new vintage, 1999, of Ravenswood Vintners blend is 10 times what it was last year, glad to taste that it's back on track, once again offering zesty and ripe flavors. BTW, Has anyone enjoyed the Rosenblum Cuvee or Ironstone zins?
