We had great Kansas City strip steaks to celebrate my mother's birthday a few years back at the Carleton Ritz hotel in Kansas City. Only complaint--when my sister asked to change the reservation from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm they said they couldn't change it--yet the dining room was sparsely populated the whole time we were there. There was no reason they couldn't have accommodated us an hour later.

On behalf of KC...sorry if one of us acted snotty. We'll find him/her and make 'em move off to a coast, pronto. Just FYI, that Ritz-Carlton is now a Fairmont hotel, and you may have hit upon the reason why it changed hands.

By the way, when you're in KC, please don't eat Steak at a hotel, no matter how fine the hotel. Get a cab & go to 'The Golden Ox' steakhouse in the West Bottoms (where the KC Stockyards used to be). 2nd choice, the Majestic Steakhouse or the Hereford House, but the natives know the OX is where it's at.

Returning this thread to 'Value Cabernet'. Recommend the '98 Columbia Crest Grand Estates and the '99 Terra Rosa Chilean/Argentina offering from Patrick Campbell of Laurel Glen.

Beef and Cabernet. It's what's for dinner.
