2001 E. Guigal Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Took a 6-pack of this lovely wine to San Diego. As usual this is one of the stars of this fine vintage. Not really sure if I gave the wine enough attention as it was drunk with friends at lunch. Do know I'll be putting a box or so in the cellar. Really tasty stuff that every one enjoyed. No scoring. WW

On youse guys advice, I picked up a case but could not contain from cracking one open. Really nice, "traditional" CDP? Aromas of leather, gamey, earthy, and some dark fruit but not really out front, most things are nicely integrating. Long finish....curiosity over now, so hopefully the rest will get to rest until 2009.

Hey guys, heard from a wine drinking buddy of mine that these guys are starting to fade. Have any of you corked one recently?

Nope, I'd planned to wait 'till '09 to pop one. I've got a '99 and some '00s for which I had plans before moving to the '01. I find it hard to believe that such a well-thought-of CdP would start to fall apart after only 7 years. I would find it more likely that they're sleeping right now. That having been said, again, I have no personal experience to draw upon, so perhaps they are already on the downslope. If so, it would be quite disappointing. Anybody else have any recent experience?

So I corked one of my four tonight and I can tell you...the rumors of this wines demise are certainly exaggerated. Wonderful thick and delicious wine with a moderate amount of tannin. Good stuff.

I am no pro, but this is drinking well now and seems to me to have plenty of stuffing left to go several more years. Delicious wine.

As they say in Horseshooes and hand grenades " close enough to 09 for me". Opened another of these hummers for lunch yesterday. Nose still a bit shy but after 3/4 hr. of coaxing started giving it up....Barny, leather, gamy, black fruits and some spice. All come over to the palate. Solid entry, weighty center and a 4+ lapper finish. Shuts down after about 30 seconds after swallowing. IMHO still needs another 2-4 and will hold for another 8-10. A solid 91/92. WW

Agreed. A little more time in the cellar and it will develop incredibly. I managed to pick up two bottles. Too bad its just two...
