1997 Domaines Schlumberger, Les Princes Abbes, Vin D'Alsace, Riesling ($13). Lemony apples on the nose and upfront. Dry as a bone with earthy mustiness and splendid acidity across the palate, and bells and whistles on the finish. Matched delightfully with a smoked chicken, nuked zucchini, and garlic bread. Understand the '98 is even better. Could be the very best QPR in a Riesling D'Alsace.

EASY MICROWAVE ZUCCHINI:

3 Small assorted (green & yellow) zucchini
1 Small onion
Butter or olive oil
Grating cheese
Salt & pepper
Any of your favorite herbs or spices

Take a medium covered glass or ceramic baking dish. Slice squash in thick slices, and onion into thin slices. Arrange in dish, dot with butter or sprinkle with oil, grate on your favorite Italian grating cheese, and season. Cover and nuke for twelve minutes (four minutes each in three different positions).

Oh--I get it. Problem is: I do not own a microwave. Never could see the benefit in the newfangled thing, unless I run a restaurant and need a fast warming device. I like to cook with a gas-burning stove--and maybe a toaster-oven for roasting peppers and such.
